How often you should get your dogs nails done? When your dogs nails grow out so does the quick( this is blood vessels and nerves in the nail). When the quick grows out then to cut the nails back you have to cut the quick that is when the nails bleed and it causes you dog pain. The solution to this is have the nails done every month even if you do not have the hair done.
Nails can grow into the pads, can cause deformities in the foot and cause discomfort if left too long. It can also lead to infections and removal of the toes themselves.

Just the other day we had a cat come in with an eye it did not want to open. We were able to inform the owners as they had not noticed and they were able get their beloved pet to the vet.
It is not uncommon for us to notice health issues that owners miss. Some have been life saving. Regular visits to your groomer can be a very important part of your health program for your pets. It is not just for a pretty face. We touch every part of their body's during the grooming process and feel things and see things you may miss in everyday petting and grooming.

Winter 2010

It has been a dreadful winter so far. This is all the more reason to keep up on your pets grooming. We want to keep their hair and skin in good condition and keep their nails at a proper length for both appearance and health.

As we groom Your best friends it is not uncommon for us to find things that need a vet attention that are missed in your everyday interaction with your pet. Just this week we were able to let the owners of one animal about a possible cancer on her cat. Had she not come in it could have gone on for months without treatment. We all know how important early detection is not just for cancer but other conditions too.

Over the winter our fury friends get wet now and then from the snow which can add to the problem of matting. This is not only unattractive but uncomfortable for your pet. It will cause the grooming experience for your pet to not be as pleasant as it could be if they were kept on a good grooming schedule. This can also increase your cost of grooming when you do come in due to increased work and time spent on your animal.

You would never consider not washing your hair or taking a bath because it is winter so why would we make that decisions for our pets.

Kathy and Larry's Fat Loss Success

Larry has now gone from a 3X to a medium and from a 46 to a 34 waist and has lost 68 pounds

Kathy has gone from a 4x to a 1X on the top and form a size 32 to a 26 and still shrinking.

We have recently started working with a trainer for me to rehab an injury that has not allowed me to exercise through this process till now. I also wish to regain function from almost two years of a very sedentary life due to injuries, tone up, increase endurance, flexability, balance, and strengthen my core to help prevent future injuries. larry has reached his goal with no exercise so is in need of toneing up, building core strength, and increasing endurance.
We will update as time goes on.

This week I had the first case in history of raisin
toxicity ever seen at MedVet. My patient was
a 56-pound, 5 yr old male neutered lab mix
that ate half a canister of raisins sometime
between 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM on Tuesday. He
started with vomiting, diarrhea and shaking
about 1AM on Wednesday but the owner didn't
call my emergency service until 7AM.

I had heard somewhere about raisins AND
grapes causing acute Renal failure but hadn't
seen any formal paper on the subject. We
had her bring the dog in immediately. In the
meantime, I called the ER service at MedVet,
and the doctor there was like me - had heard
something about it, but ... Anyway, we
contacted the ASPCA National Animal Poison
Control Center and they said to give IV fluids
at 1 & 1/2 times maintenance and watch the
kidney values for the next 48-72 hours..

The dog's BUN (blood urea nitrogen level) was
already at 32 (normal less than 27) and
creatinine over 5 (1.9 is the high end of normal).
Both are monitors of kidney function in the
bloodstream. We placed an IV catheter and
started the fluids. Rechecked the renal values
at 5 PM and the BUN was over 40 and creatinine
over 7 with no urine production after a liter of
fluids. At that point I felt the dog was in acute
renal failure and sent him on to MedVet for a
urinary catheter to monitor urine output overnight
as well as overnight care.

He started vomiting again overnight at MedVet
and his renal values have continued to increase
daily. He produced urine when given lasix as a
diuretic. He was on 3 different anti-vomiting
medications and they still couldn't control his
vomiting. Today his urine output decreased
again, his BUN was over 120, his creatinine was
at 10, his phosphorus was very elevated and his
blood pressure, which had been staying around
150, skyrocketed to 220 ... He continued to vomit
and the owners elected to Euthanize.

This is a very sad case - great dog, great owners
who had no idea raisins could be a toxin. Please
alert everyone you know who has a dog of this
very serious risk.

Poison control said as few as 7 raisins or grapes could be toxic. Many people I know give their dogs grapes or raisins as treats including our ex-handler's. Any exposure should give rise to immediate concern.
Onions, chocolate, cocoa and macadamia nuts can
be fatal, too.

Even if you don't have a dog, you might have friends
who do. This is worth passing on to them.

Update on weight loss

When you walk in the shop and see two people you are not sure you know, have no fear it really is us. Just walk in like you own the place as we always say. We look forward to you seeing less of US in the comming months.

We can not tell you exactly how much weight we have lost so far because we lost weight so fast our scale got confused and went into tilt mode. We have a new scale on its way.

Larry has now lost over 40 lbs and is looking great and feeling great. He has gone from a 48 waist wearing his belt underth his belly to a 38 wearing his belt on his normal waistline. I am sure you will be amazed when you see him. Larry is in "skinny clothes" now and will soon be buying new smaller clothes.
I have lost over 30 lbs and many inches and am looking forward to loosing much more over the next few months.
We looking forward to seeing all of you and our furry friends soon.

About the incredible results we are getting with our new weight loss. Most of you know we have a network marketing business we do on the side.

Two weeks ago we started using a new product from our company call OSOLEAN. We had are doubts but we lost weight so fast we did not even get our before pictures taken. Larry lost 20 pounds and I lost 15 pounds in just two weeks. I have to tell you we are ecstatic. As a result of the dry spell the fleas are back. You may want to make sure you have treatment for them. Fleas can cause an allergic reaction which can cause skin problems requiring treatment by your veterinarian. Fleas also carry other illness.

Food Even a Dog Shouldn't Eat - Killing Our Pets with Every Meal
By Jackie Alan Giuliano, Ph.D.

Each year, Americans spend $10 billion on pet food for our beloved companion animals, animals we treat like members of our families and whom we love as our closest friends. Yet 95 percent of the food fed to these treasured creatures is made up of materials that are unfit for human consumption and contain little nutritional value. Banshee as a puppy. As a result, "man's best friend" has skin disorders, arthritis, obesity, heart disease and a variety of cancers. Without speech, our animal companions cannot tell us of the insidious, often life threatening ill health they experience.
A large percentage of commercial pet food is made up of meat by-products, a toxic brew containing diseased and contaminated meat from slaughterhouses, animal heads, toenails, chicken feathers, feet and beaks. It also includes dead animals picked up from the nation's roads, rancid kitchen grease and frying oil from the nation's kitchens, and millions of pounds of dead animals from the country's animal hospitals and shelters.
Meat Packing Plant.The meat industry produces a tremendous amount of waste. Half of every cow and one-third of every pig butchered is wasted. Add to that the millions of tons of dead animals each year and you have an incredible waste problem.
In the United States alone, rendering is a $2.4 billion industry with 286 rendering plants disposing of over 100 million pounds of dead animals, meat wastes and fat EVERY DAY.
A few years ago, Baltimore reporter Van Smith visited a rendering plant in his city and found that the large vats that collect and filter the animals prior to cooking contained a vast array of animals including dead dogs, cats, raccoons, opossums, deer, foxes, snakes, a baby circus elephant and the remains of a police department horse. This one rendering plant alone processes 1,824 dead animals every month. Every year this one plant turns 150 million pounds of decaying, diseased and drug filled flesh and kitchen grease into 80 million pounds of meat and bone meal, tallow and yellow grease. This nutritionally dead, often toxic material provides the base for most pet foods and is found in a vast array of products used by humans as well.
Shredding before boiling at the rendering plant.This meat and bone meal is used to augment the feed of poultry, pigs, cattle and sheep destined for human consumption.
The deceptive product label names to watch out for that indicate the presence of this deadly soup include meat meal, meat by-products, poultry meal, poultry by-products, fish meal, fish oil, yellow grease, tallow, beef fat, chicken fat and fatty acids.
Fatty acids can be found in lipstick, inks and waxes and other rendering products such as tallow and grease go into soaps, candles, tires, many drugs and gummy candies. The health conscious consumer should avoid all these ingredients in human and pet foods.

Many toxic chemicals make their way into the rendered products. In addition to the unused meat from the livestock slaughtering process, dead, dying, diseased and disabled animals are also included. These animals are known as "4D meat" in the trade. Along with the meat comes disease, antibiotics and other drugs used during the animals' lives, pesticides, cattle ID tags and surgical needles.
Unsold supermarket meats, still in their plastic and Styrofoam wrappings, go into the mix as well as the plastic bags they are delivered in.
The millions of dead dogs and cats from veterinarians and animals shelters go into the rendering pots, including their flea collars containing toxic pesticides, ID tags and a variety of powerful drugs.
The city of Los Angeles sends 200 tons of euthanized cats and dogs to West Coast Rendering plant every month. This is just from the city's animal shelters and does not include animals from private veterinarians.
Euthanized dogs.A common drug found in the rendering brew is phenobarbital, commonly used to euthanize sick animals. The American Journal of Veterinary Research did a study in 1985 that showed there was virtually no degradation of this drug during the typical rendering process and that measurable quantities of it remain present in the rendered material used for pet foods and for feeding cattle destined for human consumption.
The grains in pet food bear little resemblance to the nutrient rich cereals we assume are present. Pet food grain consists of the leftovers after the grain has been processed for humans. It also contains moldy grain that has been declared unfit for human consumption. Some of the mold is toxic and potentially deadly.
The preservatives added to pet foods, and human foods, are highly toxic. Sodium nitrite, a coloring agent and preservative, ethoxyquin, an insecticide, BHA and BHT have all been linked to cancer. Your dog could be consuming as much as 26 pounds of preservatives each year if it is fed these foods.
The state of ill health that these non-foods generate is responsible for a host of health problems and can cause a hypersensitivity to flea and insect bites. Many flea allergies would go away in animals if their diets were changed.
8,000 gallon fat boiler. The pet food industry is unregulated by government bodies. An organization called the Association of American Feed Control Officials sets the standards. Its membership includes a few state agency representatives, but it is mostly run by commercial pet food industry workers.
Don't be fooled by pet food sold at a veterinarian's office. Depending upon the brand, this food can contain most of the same ingredients as commercial pet foods sold in supermarkets. The corporations that own these brands are simply very clever with their advertisement and product placements and begin courting vets during their training with free food, lectures and even clothing.
Fortunately, there are alternatives , but you will need to pay more. Rather than paying 15 cents a pound for toxic commercial pet food, you may need to spend a dollar a pound. But the thousands of dollars you could save in treating your pet's food-caused illnesses could more than make this up.
As always, larger issues loom. We must cast off the comfortable assumptions we have lived with all our lives, discover the truth and act on it. Change your pet's food today. And change your own, while you are at it!

I has been suggested that almost 500 out of 100,000 dogs get skin cancer. Your furry friend depends on you to protect him or her.
Regular grooming can help protect your pet in that early detection is as importnat for him or her as it is for you.

"Carcinoma and sarcoma, the two out of the four major types of cancer, are the ones that normally occur in the skin of a dog that need to be differentiated for treatment purposes. Skin cancer usually affects four different types of cells and is divided into four categories as such.

Epithelial tumors are associated with the skin, skin glands and hair follicles.
Mesenchyme tumors are cancers resulting from cells that support fat, connective tissue, blood vessels and nerves.
Round cell tumors include cancer of the external sex organs, mast cell tumors and plasma cell tumors.
Melanomas are cancer of the cells responsible for pigment in the skin.
Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer. Carcinoma is a term that denotes to a cancer that initially starts in the cells and surrounds an organ completely. Another form of carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, grows gradually and does not normally spread to other parts of the body.

Another common form of skin cancer is associated with mast cells that control coagulation of blood and permeability of blood vessels. Mast cell tumors are usually malignant and arise from connective tissue. Allergic reactions may activate mast cell in a manner that any genetic or environmental predisposition can result in transforming these cells into a cancerous state."

What a Storm!

We hope everyone is safe and did not recieve to much damage during the storm. We know many people lost power and recieved much tree and property damage. We had some tree damage and our gate was ripped off and thrown into our car. The damage was dminamal to the car. We have been able to resume our business today as normal.

Well it is Saturday and we have had a day of dogs with spring Matting. I would llike to encourage everyone to purchase a greyhound style comb and if you do not know how to use it I will be happy to help you learn when you come in.
We find people brushing over the top believing they are combing all the way through the hair and suddenly their pet is all matted and they have been combing everyday.
The other problem people have is bathing between grooms and with all this rain, we have been seeing when the hair gets wet with light matting already in the hair it shrinks up and felts the hair. Solution make sure you can get through your dogs hair with the fine end of the comb all the way through before and after bathing and after they get wet outside run your comb through it.
I hope this helps you in your efforts to care for you little friends.
Do not put your dog through a full groom every time. Just try to do one leg or one ear and do a couple of min every day you will see a marked improvment and your dog will learn to love the time you spend grooming on him becasue you are not dematting all the time. For those of you who like to keep your dogs long this will help you keep them long and keep your grooming cost down. If you are bringing your dog in every four weeks we would like to ask that you not bath between grooms unless you can get a fine tooth comp all the way through your pets hair.

I think to start this page with a big thank you to all of our loyal customers through the years. We have met many of Omaha's finest furry friends and their people.
We know things are tight for many of our customers with the gas prices and the fallout from that so we started a new program a few months back to help out during this crises.
For those of you who bring your Dogs in on a regular 4 week basis we are offering a $5 discount on the groom each Visit. This is to show our Gratide to your loyal patronage and for taking such good care of your Pets.
If your pet does however get seriouly matted during that time period we will have to charge you for that but you will still get a $5 off what your total would be. We put bows on any animals that request them at no charge.
We charge $50 for cats that includes what ever they need. Bath and dry, hair cut if you get one, ears and trim nails. It is rare that we up-charge cats but we have gotten a few that are in such a condition requiring special care and for cats like that there will be a small upcharge.
We do not sadate animals. If you feel your cat needs sadated I strongly encourge you to take it to a vet that has a groomer on staff for the safty of your animal.
If you wish to sedate your dog you may do so about an hour before your appointment and please let us know when you make your apppointment and when you drop off so we can groom them before it wares off.
We take no responsibilty for the animal having a reaction to the medication. We will however rush them to a near by vet and contact you if somehting occures.
